The esplanade of "El Escorial" (Madrid) is a huge and ascetic plain made of stone -built under the reign of Felipe II in the XVI century- which is crossed daily by tens of peoples. The idea of this film is to describe this space and the figures that cross it. Spring up then the chance choreographies arising from the day-to-day life. The general intention is to find the extraordinary inside the ordinary and to show the distinctive manners of walking of each passer-by, as well as what they have in common. This is the case for example with people from the village who always walk straight, following the stone paths. The film tries to vindicate public space, and the beauty and mystery that uprise from daily and repetitive things.

Ressonàncies magnètiques

I suppose that we have all wanted at times to be able to read someone else’s mind. This story began the day I decided to enter into the head of Isa, my beloved lover. I had already taken thousands and thousands of photos of her, but photos never go through bodies, neither allow to seize ideas. Was there any way of knowing what she was really thinking about, or what she was feeling? I’ve never forgotten the first time I heard of magnetic resonance”. This is how my love story began, based on three experiences (free association of words, singing three songs and remembering three special cities for our couple), that aimed at penetrating, through a magnetic resonance device, the hidden bends of Isa’s brain.

Le bruit du canon

Le bruit du canon
27 min | France | 2006

Every year, between October and March, a black cloud of 500 000 starlings crashes onto the Locarn region in Brittany. Swarms of birds ravage the crops and despoil the agriculture. A small wood of firs turns into a “dormitory” for these migratory birds, which cover the ground and the trees with tones of their evacuation.

Farmers have tried everything to fight against this plague. They tell us about their various attempts, more or less legal, more or less successful, to drive away the birds or to kill them. They describe the damages and the details of their daily horror. It is a declared war against the birds, lead by the humans, in a helpless struggle with a Nature that remains far beyond their understanding.

Meanwhile the birds perform magnificent choreographies above the firs. Their astonishing gathering makes this phenomenon alarming as well as mysterious.

Au-delà du supermarché tries to show death, blood and violence that are hidden from our eyes and that denature the reality where we live.
